In his State of the State Message, Governor Cuomo recognizes New York's historic achievement of enacting the $15 an hour minimum wage that will help hundreds of thousands of low-paid workers across the state. We are optimistic that the Governor will continue to recognize the cause of just compensation for all employees, including Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) serving people with developmental disabilities. Fortunately, the Governor understands that while DSPs are often seen as minimum wage workers, they deserve more than the minimum wage due to the extraordinary demands of their job. We are grateful to the Governor and Legislature for taking the first step towards providing DSPs a living wage during the last legislative session, but it is critical that the remaining steps be funded. We are hopeful the Governor will continue to help DSPs achieve a living wage by including funding in his state budget proposal.
