The Arc New York & COVID-19: A Data-Driven Experience

October 20 Educational Session - 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
“The Arc New York & COVID-19: A Data-Driven Experience”

Upon the onset of the pandemic, The Arc New York initiated a comprehensive COVID-19 infection data collection effort with New York State IDD providers. What started out as an impromptu internal tool and resource, grew exponentially and soon incorporated Syracuse University researchers. The outcome of the data collection and research effort identified the increased risk and mortality rates for individuals with IDD, generated several mitigation strategies from New York State, assisted in tracing spread across the state, helped identify best practices, and resulted in numerous advocacy efforts—most of which would not have occurred but for this data collection and research. Several publications on these findings led to substantial media attention and focus by key state leaders. In this session we will chronicle the development of this data effort, how it evolved over time, describe lessons learned and the power of data analysis efforts for human service sector providers.
